Mirror of health is in your hands- by Dr. Pallavi Sharma

Hands are the symbol of our capability and strength to make our own destiny; we express love and affection through the sense of touch, through our hands. We radiate our feelings of safety, love and warmth through touch of our hands to our loved ones. The mother expresses her care and love for her baby through her warm palms. This is best explained as Hasta Sweda in the Kashyapa Samhita, where it is indicated to apply warmth of mother’s palms to the ailing child.

By joining our hands we greet every one with a Namaskaar.

The meaning of Namaskaar is, when you fold both the palms together and hold them on your chest, near the heart region, the ten senses surrender to the person adored that is the Divine Lord with real sincerity in the heart.

Apart from this a lot is indicated about your health from your hands like

Five fingers for five elements - Thumb stands for Agni / fire energy the thumbs up sign for success.

Index finger stands for Vayu/ Air/Wind energy.

Middle finger stands for space/Akash.

The ring finger stands for Prithvi/ Earth energy.

Little finger stands for Jala/water energy. So we can say our panchmahabhuts (Five basic elements) also take care our hand.

If a particular finger nail has abnormal signs, look for a corresponding imbalance in the organ whose meridian is associated with that finger and nail.

Thumb nail is an indicator for the brain.

Index finger nail is an indicator for the lungs and colon.

Middle finger nail is an indicator for the small intestine.

Ring finger nail is an indicator for the kidney.

Little finger nail is an indicator for the heart and female reproductive organs.

Physiology-

Asthi (Bones) is the fifth dhatu (tissue) of the body. As bones receive nourishment from the blood to grow, the finger nails are the by product (mala) of the asthidhatu (bones). Each dhatus is interrelated as they nourish each other in a sequential nature. This means that the condition of the nails reflects the condition of all body tissues up to majja (bone marrow) and shukradhatus (reproductive tissue) and their related updhatus and malas. Ayurveda says that Asthi is the seat of Vata. Any type of Vata imbalance food and life style will create problems in bones.

Very few people are blessed with naturally perfect skin. More people today are living in cities, constantly exposed to dirt and pollution, ways running to be in time, tension producing lifestyles, yet aspiring to natural beauty. Toxins seem to be everywhere, in the food we eat by our hands, water we drink, and the air we breathe. But a large share of the cause of ailments we see in our daily life, is the effect of our unhygienic hands.

What do your hands say?

  1. If grooving and ridging is found in nails, it is a sign of long standing diseases of respiratory system.

  2. Roughness and hardness of hands is indicative of poor nourishment-protein deficiency.

  3. Thin and brittle nails tell about calcium deficiency as in rickets, osteomalacia.

  4. Pits or depression over the nails is found in mal-nutrition specially Vit.B, proteins and anemia due to iron deficiency.

  5. Clubbing of finger tips, occurs due to long standing diseases of lungs, heart, kidney.

  6. Absence of nails, rudimentary nails, horn like and other shaped nails are all sahaja-congenital defects.

  7. White spots show calcium or zinc deficiency. This appears after a long period of eating sweets.

  8. Bitten nails show nervousness, mineral deficiency, or intestinal parasites-generally an exaggerated vata condition.

  9. Brittle nails show low iron or vitamin A, imbalanced thyroid or kidney function and poor circulation.

  10. Split nails show a low agni in the stomach.

  11. Dark red nails show blood stagnation due to eating heavy, salty, fatty foods.

  12. Yellowish nails show liver imbalance.

Protecting the beauty of hands-

It is necessary to protect the beauty of hands because the wrinkles on hands give an old look at a young age itself.

  1. Wash the hands with multanimitti at least twice a week and clean with luke warm water.

  2. During winters rub lemon juice and honey on the hands. This makes hands soft, smooth and clean.

  3. Mix equal proportion of lemon juice, honey and rose water and apply on hands and feet at bed time.

  4. If the skin of hands is chapped then apply papaya pulp and raw milk on hands. This lightens the wrinkles from hand.

  5. Keep the hands in luke warm water for some time daily, this removes the dirt and make hands soft.

  6. Regularly massage the hands against one another, use the palm of one hand on the backside of other hand. This maintains proper blood circulation.

  7. Rotate the hands in all directions to make then beautiful, shapely and attractive.

Normal Nails-

Healthy nails are pinkish in color, smooth and evenly shaped.

The actual shape and consistency varies with which dosha is dominant.

Vata type nails tend to be most irregular in shape and are prone to being pale and brittle.

Pitta nails are an even oval shape, soft, flexible and pink.

Kapha nails are squarer, thick and strong.

Protecting the beauty of nails-

  1. On a daily basis use a soft nail brush to clean and massage the nails and finger tips.

  2. Rubbing the finger nails of both hands together against each other, promotes the hair growth.

  3. Soak nails in warm water and lemon juice.

  4. Massage each nails with sesame oil.

  5. Neem oil nourishes and strengthens the nails.

  6. Once in a month can do manicure for enhance the beauty.

Tips for Promoting Healthy Calcium absorption for beauty of hands

  • Eat foods that are easy for the body to digest.

  • Eat the biggest meal at mid-day, when the digestive fire is strongest.

  • Avoid caffeine and refined carbohydrates such as sugar.

  • Avoid cold or iced drinks, which decrease the digestive fire.

  • Do a daily warm oil massage (abhyanga). It helps enhance digestion and flush away impurities, and is traditionally known to stimulate bone growth.

  • Go to bed by 10 p.m. and get up early in the morning.

  • Eat plenty of foods that are high in calcium, such as sesame seeds, green leafy vegetables, walnuts, cereals, coconut and coconut milk. Warm whole milk is also an excellent calcium-booster. To enhance digestion, drink your milk separate from meals.

  • Calcium is necessary not only for the hardness of the bone, but also for proper working of the muscles, nerves and clotting of blood.

A thank you note

Dear Dr. Kotecha,

Dear Dr. Parvathy and Dr. Pallavi,

I hope you all with the great team are very well in Jaipur, continuing happily your life, which is dedicated to Ayurveda with love.

As promised, I write you to send a feedback on my experience and on my personal training in your clinic.

First, I had to thank you for your warm hospitality and your great human approach. I learn a lot and intensively in some of the main areas of ayurveda and I was in deeper with this great and complex science of life. Thanks to your efficient team of doctors, complete services and a great pharmacy, I had customized lessons according to my needs. When I first came in the clinic, I was impressed by the strong smell, manifesting the quality and the natural power of the oils. In 3 weeks, I could enhance myself and my passion for herbs and oils cooking, panchakarma different technics, ayurveda's principles and lifestyle, constitution diagnosis and different way of treatments of unbalances and diseases.  But first of all, in your center, I found my way and my meaning of life, I had many revelations : I could confirm that my intensions with ayurveda are true and positive, and I felt surrounded in my ayurveda's path, in my life's convictions. I was helped in my search for wellbeing and balance, supported towards real health. You naturally increased my knowledge, but most of all, my conscience and my convictions, my trust in ayurveda. You learned me how to give right conditions to my body and to my mind to empower themselves, heal themselves and know what it is good for me. I found the support I needed for personal balance and all I needed for my professional background. I found my ayurveda family in India.

I am very very happy with my experience, and I thank you all. I also had one panchakarma on me, Virechana, and this changed my life by deeply cleaning the mind and body. I felt comfortable immediately after one week of treatment and ready for a new stage of life, clear in my ideas. Also, my long history of pressure problem in my ears disappear. I felt lots of energy and need to change and reset my life and make new projects with new motivation. In fact, that's the world, through virechana, and after long meditations with the monks in Himachal :-) I felt a new and strong motivation arising, endurance, and calm energy. Now, I continue to work myself on motivation (and forget about expectation)!

I am here back to my world in Europe, happy and stronger, miss you all very much because it was too short for me to absorb everything and wanted to stay more in this nature, my nature. I really feel I would like to come back soon, travel, work in India or make a stage... I had this feeling to be surrounded in Jaipur by humans and ayurveda that are in accord to my life conception and dreams. Here I am quite alone in fulfilling and living this principles of life. But I keep going on strongly.

Is my mission maybe here in EU, to guide people and help them discovering ayurveda and their wellbeing? Or is my destiny to come to India and fulfill my nature completely there?

Sure is that I will come back soon, now that I have opened this door and I see full of light... it is time to learn more... enhance my capacity to be and to give!

With big thanks and best wishes to all of you,

Peace,

Thea

PS: I follow my diet regimen according to prakriti and vikruti, every day, with good Indian ayu fresh cooking and sweet tastes. Have lots of spices with me so I think I can last for some months...

I let you know about the evolution. I eat 3 times a day. For know I feel good, pitta is calmer, no burning, and vata is quite balanced, more calm as well, bowels are very good, 1-2max every day. I sleep good, not so much, I weak up at 7 with good energy. Here is cold now, so need the oils I bought to make warm massages, cook and massage with dashmool bala oil to hydrate myself.

 Thanks!

Thea Ruggia
