HTML clipboard

Editors' Note

Dear Readers,

Women are the caretakers for our family but they often neglect themselves and their own health and wellness for the benefit of those around them or to live up to society's pressures. Multiple roles as the mother, daughter, wife, homemaker, wage earner can be physically and mentally quite taxing. As a woman, she might share some common health risks with men, such as Hypertension, Diabetes etc. but because of her special reproductive role, she is at risk of some distinctly female disorders. In this newsletter, we shall see more about Ayurvedic recommendations for women's health.

Enjoy reading and get benefited with Ayurveda.

We welcome you suggestions and submissions.

Ayurveda For Women

As per Ayurveda, there are different stages in a woman's life i.e. period before menarche, reproductive age and period after menopause. Accordingly specific diet and lifestyle regimens are advised to follow during these phases as well as proper support needs to be there so as to manage her with the changes properly. Followings are the healthy diet and lifestyle advises for women's health:

Daily routine: Dinacharya

• Getting up early in the morning preferably before sunrise.
• Elimination of natural urges (urine and feces)
• Brushing teeth followed by mouth gargle with 1 tsp sesame oil.
• Splashing eyes with plain water and instilling one drop of ghee in each nostril.
• Sesame oil or mustard oil application on the body in winters and coconut oil or ghee application on the body in summers, followed by bathing.
• One-hour exercise or walking or yoga daily. This helps them to have proper functioning of all the organs as well as maintain metabolism and lessen anxiety and stress.
• Instilling one drop of plain cow's ghee in the eyes at night at bedtime.

Diet: Ahara

• Take proper breakfast. Breakfast must never be skipped. Try to avoid cornflakes, bread or processed food on a daily basis.
• Lunch should be proper and better to have daily routine time for it. It is preferable to take raw salads one hour before lunch.
• Dinner should be early and light by 7-7.30 pm.
• There should be a proper routine for taking meals.
• There should be a gap of at least 2 hours between dinner and sleep.
• Staying hungry or without food for long hours like fasting should be avoided. Even long gaps between meals are also not advisable.
• Daily 3 main meals should be taken. And a healthy snack like fruits or salads or sprouts or roasted peanuts can be taken in the morning. In the evening there could be some light home made fresh snacks like fresh fruits or soups, etc.
• Munching between the meals should be avoided.
• Always freshly made warm food should be taken. Food kept overnight or refrigerated food should not be consumed.
• Food should be taken slowly and without doing any work in between. Avoid talking, watching television or using mobile while eating.
• Include sufficient ghee / oil in diet. It is best to use cow's ghee / unrefined oil. Avoid heavy to digest oils like soybean oil.
• Include vegetable source of protein daily in diet. It can be in form of cooked lentil or lentils soaked overnight and steamed (like sprouts) or tofu.
• Milk and milk products like fresh curd, buttermilk, fresh butter should be taken daily as natural source of calcium. However curd should be taken during the day only and avoid it at night.
• To avoid iron deficiency and to maintain normal hemoglobin levels; include fresh fruits, spinach and green leafy vegetables, dates, figs, beetroot, chickpea and other lentils in daily diet.
• Water intake should be at least 1.5 – 2 liters. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body. Boiled and then filtered water should be taken at room temperature or lukewarm in small quantities throughout the day at regular intervals. In summers drink water from mud pot and avoid refrigerated water and drinks.
• Intake of milk tea and coffee should be restricted to only 2 small cups in a day. Prefer to take fresh herbal teas (Tulsi tea, Ginger tea, Cinnamon tea) daily.
• Take a cup of warm milk before going to bed. Milk can be spiced with cardamom, cloves and cinnamon.
• Take varieties of food daily having all essential nutrients like protein source (daal/beans), carbohydrates (wheat/rice), fats (ghee / oil), fruits and vegetables etc in daily diet.
• Drink a cup of cumin tea (In 1 cup of water, add 1 tsp cumin seeds and bring it to boil. Then filter and drink it like a tea) if you have bloating or gases.
• Chew fennel seeds after each meal. This helps in enhancing proper digestion and also acts as a mouth freshener.
• Seasonal fruits and vegetables are a must to be incorporated in daily dietary routine.
• Excess intake of deep fried, oily, spicy food, garam masala, fast food (pizza, burger, chips etc), white flour (maida), too much of sweet (heavy milk sweets, refined sugar) and sour things (pickles, processed food, sauces, etc) should be reduced. Home made healthy snacks can be taken.

Sleep: Nidra

• Day sleep should be avoided. However a nap of 15 – 20 minutes can be taken, but not immediately after lunch.
• Sleeping immediately after taking meals/food is not advisable. Go to bed early at least before 11 pm and complete 7 – 8 hours of night sleep.

The natural progression of life is like the changing of seasons. A woman goes through different phases of physical and physiological changes during her lifetime. As per Ayurveda, women should follow proper diet and lifestyle to stay healthy and for wellbeing of their psychological, emotional and spiritual levels also.

Facts About Ayurvedic Medicine

Positive anything is better than negative nothing the same way if one can realize the positivity of Ayurveda than no need to apply anything for Healthy and Happy life...few interesting FAQ for Ayurveda are below Change Your Perspectives About Ayurveda....

1. Ayurvedic Medicine is Difficult to take

This is true to some extent, as the medicine in this field requires to be adjusted to a medium that would enhance its properties. Most of the classical drugs are available in the form of powders, tablets, syrups and chutneys. Yet, these days a majority of pharmaceutical companies have come out with effective patent drugs in easy tablets and capsules form. These are quite effective as these mostly contain extract form of the medicine/herbs.

2. Ayurvedic Medicine is Non-Researched

I would not agree to this false belief because our inherent pathy of Ayurveda is age-old and time tested. Since times immemorial this system of medicine has been in use and has proved to be result oriented and justified. It would be of good concern to ponder over the fact that the same herbal drugs and formulations that had been used hundreds of years ago are still in use. There has been little or no replacements whatsoever.

3. Ayurvedic Medicine is too expensive

Not all Ayurvedic medicines are expensive. Though, it is a combination of drugs that make the same less pocket friendly. Yet, there are options and substitutes available. Some medicinal formulations contain expensive ingredients like gold and silver. These are generally prescribed only in case of chronic or severe form of disease.

4. Ayurvedic Medicine is offensive in Taste and Odor

There is no denying of the fact that some medicines like the blood purifiers tend to be bitter. But that is exactly what the patient with a skin disease is missing on. The bitter or pungent taste is required for the body so as to perform the cleansing act effectively. Even then if the patient is unable to take a particular product, the doctor would definitely suggest a combination medium like honey or mishri (crystalline sugar).

5. Ayurvedic Medicine contains Steroids

This sort of misconception is also prevalent nowadays, especially among the more cognizant class. Yet, let me avail this chance to absolutely contradict this doubt. The medicines in the Ayurvedic system is either herb based or there are formulations prepared from natural resources or metals that have been thoroughly prepared in accordance with the pharmaceutical and pharmacological evidence available in the Ayurvedic texts. You could escape these doubts when visiting a registered and qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

6. Ayurvedic Medicine is Slow in showing Results

I would once again contradict this statement. The irony lies with the delay from the patient's side. Most of the patients visiting holistic practitioners take their time in trying the other systems of medicine so as to derive a faster result. This not only delays the effect of the medicine, it also hampers with the working of the drug. This is because the patient has either tried much more complicated and powerful combinations of drugs, the effect of which needs to be neutralized first. Or in the mean time his malady has substantially become deep rooted and taken chronic form. It may at times show to work slowly, but as the fable goes "Slow and steady wins the race."

7. Ayurvedic Medicine is Only for Chronic Diseases

Although a number of Ayurvedic medicines have shown effective results especially in case of long lasting and chronic ailments, as is generally a limitation with many other systems. But, it is equally effective in providing harmless benefits for acute problems like viral fever and common cold.

8. Ayurvedic Medicine could be Harmful for the Kidneys

This is very uncommon occurrence. According to my belief, the only reason for this, if any, could be of taking the drugs that are not prepared under accurate drug standardization and surveillance. Let me state here that it should be of prime concern to purchase the medicines which have been prepared strictly under standardized stipulations.

9. Ayurvedic Medicine is only for Elderly Patients

There is no any known limitation in this form of treatment. It is equally suited to all age groups. I would also state here that Ayurveda could be considered as a boon for the children when their body system is yet tender and in the process of immunity building. The natural products do not interfere with their body resistance and at the same time tend to be more safe and comforting.

10. Ayurvedic Medicine has Side Effects

Any side effect from medicine, be it of any pathy, may result from the misuse of the drug, either in processing or in prescribing. As far as side effect or after effect is concerned, as an Ayurvedic practitioner I believe these time-tested medicines are safer provided the former two factors are precise.

The safety of Ayurvedic medicine and mode of treatment may be advocated in 3 points.

  • First, In Ayurveda the very first principle in treating a disease is to do away with the basic cause of the disease, and also to see that no new ailment should emerge as a consequence. A disease is eradicated from its roots.

  • Second, Ayurveda insists that medicine be centered at the patient, rather on the disease. The mind, body and soul are considered as a tripod and the medicine is prescribed for the overall health augmentation.

  • Third, as Ayurveda deals with the preparations mainly from herbs and natural resources, it is basically harmless therapy with least or no side effects. And precisely, this is the demand of our times.

11. Ayurvedic medicine is less Effective

I would want to say here that although Ayurveda therapy generally calls for more patience and endurance both on the part of the patient as well as the doctor, yet its efficacy cannot be undermined. The effectiveness of this natural therapy may be cited by this example. Whenever there is a rip in a cloth or a crack in a pitcher, we intend to rectify it using the similar material that it is made of (cloth and mud respectively). Similarly any fault in the human body also demands to be corrected by use of natural resources, as much as possible. Our body absorbs and responds much better to nature and Ayurveda is all natural!

12. Ayurvedic Medicines are not Assorted

I would not agree to this misconception. This is because on the contrary, Ayurvedic therapies and medications are greatly wide ranging. There are medicines to provide relief and cure from an ailment, and there are Ayurveda formulations that shield you from diseases. Nevertheless, Ayurveda products would work as anti-aging therapies, aphrodisiacs, beauty enhancing and overall balancing healing modalities and Ayurvedic medicines are actually supportive for any age group from infants to geriatrics! Ayurveda science imbibes many other natural healing therapies like Panchkarma, Yoga, Meditation, Naturopathy, Massage therapy etc. Also, there is a extensive diversity of Ayurveda medicinal formulations which come in the form of tablets, herb extract capsules, syrups, decoctions, powders, herbal jelly, concoctions, fermented potions; and oils, pastes, ointments, liniments also for local application.

13. Ayurveda Medicine is only another Alternative Therapy

I believe that Ayurvedic system of medicine is incorrectly quoted as an alternative therapy as this has always been the most ancient and complete system of medicine. It has been in existence since times immemorial, long back before the emerging of all other therapies. Moreover in India we deem that Ayurveda origins straight from the Gods more than five thousand years ago! The word Ayurveda itself is derived from 'Ayush' which means life, and 'Veda' which means science. Therefore, Ayurveda is the complete 'Science of Life'. The importance of Ayurveda can be acknowledged by the mere fact that a whole Veda has been dedicated to it. We need to understand that Ayurveda is an ancient heritage. It is a treasure to be valued and acknowledged so as to provide the humanity with a life full of health, vigor and vitality.

Almost everybody would have felt slightly depressed at some point of time. Symptoms of depression vary from person to person. When the symptoms are overwhelming and disabling one approaches the physician for help. According to Ayurveda, Ama (toxins) accumulates in the tissues, disrupts the body's delicate biochemistry causing mental frustrations often leading to depression. Other factors like drug addiction, loss of loved one, etc. can also cause depression. Depression is an illness that infiltrates your whole body. Depression can cause physical ailments and vice versa. So timely treatment for depression is necessary. There are numerous Ayurveda treatments (Shiro Abhyanga, Shirodhara, etc.) and Ayurveda herbs, which helps in treating depression effectively and removes metal sluggishness as well as enhances cognitive functions and memory leading to a healthier mental state. In this newsletter, we shall see more about Depression known as "Vishada" in Ayurveda.

Winning Over Depression Through Ayurveda

Depression is not just being deeply sad or blue, but it is a group of signs where the person feels sinking, sad, hopeless and alone constantly for a couple of weeks or more, where he or she fails to address the positivity, irrespective of positive or negative life situations; feeling of emptiness, incapable to enjoy the things which the person would normally would like to do, example-work, hobby or company of friends which in turn affects productivity, sleep, appetite or even be the cause for serious physical ailments, mental disorders and abnormal behavioral patterns over a long period of time more than a couple of weeks. The social stigma and the cultural taboos regarding the mental disorders makes it worse for the person under depression to communicate to the people around or to get needed medical assistance. Even the great personality like Arjuna was not spared from Vishada/depression is described in the 1st chapter of Mahabharata as Arjuna Vishada Yoga. Depression affects 350 million global populations of which the women outnumber men and 1 million deaths per year are due to the same. It is said to be a "common cold of mental health" which can affect any person in any age group irrespective of socioeconomic status & race.

Ayurveda explains depression or Vishada as an associated symptom of many physical ailments as well as a separate psychiatric ailment. In Ayurveda the commentators like Chakrapanidatta, Dalhana has elaborated the term "Vishada" (fear and weakness) as that which weakens the body and mind and is the aggravating factor for most of the diseases. Ayurveda considers the mind and body as the two faces of the same coin where a physical ailment can generate a mental illness. Eg.Diseases like epilepsy, leprosy, psoriasis etc can cause depression to the person owing to the social stigma towards such diseases. And similarly a mental condition can in turn pave way to a physical aliment the best example most of us have experienced is diarrhea before the exams or headaches due to stress and excess thinking. So Ayurveda is concerned not only about the body but also the mind and the soul. Even WHO have included the mental and spiritual health in the health definition apart from socio-economic and physical health.

Causes of depression

• The neurochemical imbalances like secretion and synthesis of nor epinephrine and serotonin which in turn affects circadian rhythm

• Hereditary factors

• Seasonal changes especially winter season or cold countries with less sun light

• Physiological factors – pregnancy, post partum and menopause

• Drug induced

• Excess exposure to electromagnetic waves (Television, computer, mobile phones)

• Loss of a loved one, Mate cheating, etc

Symptoms

The symptoms of depression arise with when each doshas are associated with Tamas / the mass inertia of mind.

• Vatadosha associated with tamasic nature will have excessive worries, feeling of hopelessness, pessimism, feeling of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness, anxieties, fears, phobias, terrors, delusions, compulsions, irrelevant talk, monologue or dialogue with self, attention deficit, bi-polar disease, auditory hallucinations, irritability, restlessness, difficulty to concentrate and remember details, difficulty in decision making, insomnia, early morning wakefulness, loss of appetite, aches and pains.

• Pitta dosha associated with tamas will give riseto thoughts of suicide & even suicide attempts, murder and visual hallucinations, headaches and digestive problems that do not ease even with treatments. It also causes comparison, dominance, criticism, jealousy, frustration, obsession, territorialism, anger, rage, and violence.

• Kaphadosha associated with tamas will produce sadness&feeling of emptiness, melancholia, prolonged crying, stubbornness, dark depression, hiding, hoarding, catatonia, overeating and kinesthetic hallucinations, fatigue and decreased energy, loss of interest in activities or hobbies that was once pleasurable, including sex, excessive sleep, drowsiness even after proper sleep, over eating and indigestion.

Treatment

Ayurveda has the safest treatment for depression which is neither habit forming nor with side effects. There are 3 approaches for the treatment in Ayurveda -

Daivavyapasraya- Daiva means divine or the deeds of past life, Vyapasraya means seat or support. It includes mantras & prayers, use of gems, rituals, oblations, offerings, sacrifices like fasting, prostration, pilgrimages etc. These methods create confidence and remove the fears and pessimistic tendencies in person.

Yuktivyapasraya – Yukti means logical thinking or rational knowledge. These include the internal medicines as well as external therapies. Certain classical herbs like Jyotishmati, Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Shankhapushpi tablets like Saraswatvati, Mansyadighanvati, preparations like Brahma Rasayana are good for the depression. Shirodhara, Marma Abhyangam, Ksheeradhara, Takradhara and even Shodhana Chikitsa or the Panchakarma detoxification therapies are good for depression.

Sattvaavajaya – This involves counseling part, which is inevitable as rational treatment. The person under depression doesn't need sympathy nor does he or she want other person to interfere in their life decision but need to be treated empathically with proper counseling and apt medication.

The branch of Ayurveda that deals with the mental disorders including depression is called Bhutavidya or Ayurvedic psychiatry. The Bhuta initially was interpreted as the entities of superstitious origin. But by 20th century in an attempt to avoid more epistemological and discursive aspect of Bhuta or vernacular idioms of distress, was reinterpreted as more secular and scientific idiom as bacteria, virus and microbes or even vectors which cause genetic changes which confirmed the mind body correlation of Ayurveda and also the hereditary aspect of diseases affecting the mind. Thus the treatment for depression is explained elaborately in ancient Ayurveda texts under Ayurvedic psychiatry (Bhutavidya).

The treatment for depression in the conventional medication and psychiatry has several problems including strong side effects that affect other areas of life. Moreover, the occurrence of depression cannot be prevented by these means; it just gives temporary relief as and when it occurs. On the other hand, Ayurveda provides a natural and effective way of treatment of depression, improves mental clarity and cognitive functions, also preventing re occurrences to a large extent.
