| Overweight is a state in which weight exceeds a standard based on height; Obesity is a condition of excessive fatness, either generalized or localized. In most people overweight and obesity tend to parallel each other. Overweight is a condition which can be correlated with medovriddhi. Etymology of Medovriddhi: The word “Medovriddhi" is the combination of two Sanskrit words "Meda" and "Vriddhi". The word “Meda” means - Fat of Body (Sanskrit eng dictionary) The word "Vriddhi” literally means the growth, increase etc. Concept of Meda: Ayurveda considers that the human body is made up of seven body tissues (saptha dhatu) and medodhatu is one among them. Etiology: The causative factors (nidana) known for a disease can be classified under four broad categories: A. Dietetic factors (Aharatmaka) B. Physical activities & practices (Viharatmaka) C. Psychological causes (Manasa vyaparatmaka) D. Others These are tabulated as follows - A. Dietetic factors (Aharatmaka Nidana): Excessive usage of food items (dravya) having homologous properties help in progressive increase of the tissues (dhatu) and the process becomes reversible in case of heterogeneous ones. Few dietetic factors are as follows: 1. Over eating (Ati Sampurana) 2. Highly nutritious intake (Santarpana) 3. Food intake before the digestion of the previous meal (Adhyasana) 4. Excessive Consumption of Heavy food (Guru Ahara sevana) 5. Excessive Consumption of Sweet food (Madhura Ahara sevana) 6. Excessive Consumption of Cold food (Sita Ahara sevana) 7. Sugar cane preparations (Ikshu Vikara Sevana) 16. Jaggery preparation (Guda Vikara Sevana) 17. Rice (Sali Sevana) 18. Water intake immediately after meal (Bhojanotara Jal-pana) B. Causes due to physical activities & practices (Vihara Parak Hetu): Physical activities & practices are termed as Vihar. 1. Lack of physical exercise (Avyayama) 2. Lack of sexual act (Avyavaya) 3. Day time sleep (Divaswapna) 4. Luxurious sitting for long time (Asana Sukha) 5. Bath after meal (Bhojanottar Snana) 6. After meal sleep (Bhojanotar Nidra) C.
