Medovriddhi (Overweight) by Dr. Dr Rajeshwari Singh

Overweight is a state in which weight exceeds a standard based on height; Obesity is a condition of excessive fatness, either generalized or localized. In most people overweight and obesity tend to parallel each other. Overweight is a condition which can be correlated with medovriddhi.

Etymology of Medovriddhi:

The word “Medovriddhi" is the combination of two Sanskrit words "Meda" and "Vriddhi".
The word “Meda” means   - Fat of Body (Sanskrit eng dictionary)
The word "Vriddhi” literally means the growth, increase etc.

Concept of Meda:

Ayurveda considers that the human body is made up of seven body tissues (saptha dhatu) and medodhatu is one among them.

Etiology:

The causative factors (nidana) known for a disease can be classified under four broad categories:

A. Dietetic factors (Aharatmaka)
B. Physical activities & practices  (Viharatmaka)
C. Psychological causes  (Manasa vyaparatmaka)
D. Others

These are tabulated as follows -

A. Dietetic factors (Aharatmaka Nidana):

Excessive usage of food items (dravya) having homologous properties help in progressive increase of the tissues (dhatu) and the process becomes reversible in case of heterogeneous ones. Few dietetic factors are as follows:

1. Over eating  (Ati Sampurana)
2. Highly nutritious intake (Santarpana)
3. Food intake before the digestion of the previous meal (Adhyasana)
4. Excessive Consumption of Heavy food  (Guru Ahara sevana)
5. Excessive Consumption of  Sweet food (Madhura Ahara sevana)
6. Excessive Consumption of  Cold food (Sita Ahara sevana)
7. Kapha increasing food intake (Snigdha Ahara sevana)
8. Fresh food & grain  (Navanna sevana)
9. Fresh alcoholic preparation (Nava Madya Sevana)
10. Domestic animals meat & soups  (Gramya Rasa Sevana)
11. Meat intake (Mamsa Sevana)
12. Milk Products  (Payasa Vikara Sevana)
13. Curd (Dadhi Sevana)
14. Ghee (Sarpi Sevana)
15. Sugar cane preparations  (Ikshu Vikara Sevana)
16. Jaggery preparation  (Guda Vikara Sevana)
17. Rice (Sali Sevana)
18. Water intake immediately after meal  (Bhojanotara Jal-pana)

B. Causes due to physical activities & practices (Vihara  Parak Hetu):

Physical activities & practices are termed as Vihar.

1. Lack of physical exercise  (Avyayama)
2. Lack of sexual act (Avyavaya)
3. Day time sleep  (Divaswapna)
4. Luxurious sitting for long time (Asana Sukha)
5. Bath after meal (Bhojanottar Snana)
6. After meal sleep  (Bhojanotar Nidra)

C. Psychological causes  or Manasika Nidana
The psychological causes for overweight/obesity, according to various Acharyas are listed as below-

1. Forever cheerfulness  (Harshnityatvata)
2. Free from anxiety  (Achintan)
3. Relaxation from tension  (Manasonivritti)
4. Sight of beloved things  (Priyadarsana)

D. MISCELLANEOUS CAUSES

1. Ama (accumulation of toxins in the body)
2. Administration of oily & sweet enema which is nourishing in property  (Snigdha Madhura Basti Sevana)
3. Massaging using oil  (Tailabhyanga)
4. Heredity factors (Bijadoshasvabhavata)

Treatment (Cikitsa)

Thus, the treatment has got 5 divisions:

Avoiding the causes : (Nidan Parivarjana) (S. S.U.1/25)

It very clearly advocates that the restriction and avoiding the root cause is the foremost line of treatment to curb the progression of the disease.

External purification (Bahya Sansodhana)

It includes body massage with some specific herbs powder (Ruksa Udvartana). In obese persons, it removes the foetid odour & restricts the excessive sweating & alleviates the aggravated doshas by function.

Internal purification (Abhyantara Sansodhana)

Panchakarma procedure i.e. Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Nasya (nasal drops), Anuvasana Basti ( oil enema of herbs) and Niruha basti (decoction enema of herbs).

Pacifying Therapy (Sansamana Therapy)

Dry, warm & strong basti, dry massage, night awakening, sexual act, physical activity & mental exertion should be undertaken in gradual manner. Guduchi, BhadraMusta, Triphala, Takrarista, Maksika, Vidamgadi Lauha, Bilwadi Panchmula & Shilajatu with Agnimanth Swarasa should be taken (C.S.Su.21).

Treatment of the Month

Chakrapani Ayurveda Clinic and Research Center is giving wonderful services for obesity and over- weight

Panchakarma is the best choice but require minimum 7 days.

Panchakarma includes the 5 treatments mainly as the word itself suggest pancha means 5 & Karma means treatments or actions.

The 5 treatments are emesis, purgation, oil enema, decoction enema, nasal drops/ sinus cleansing.

The treatment among these is selected as per the patients ailments, prakruti / body type, season and many other factors.

The panchakarma treatments includes the shodhana or purificatory treatments  and also has many other treatments as preparatory procedures and post treatment procedures.

The preparatory procedure is to prepare the body for elimination of toxins by any of the 5 karmas so that the body can tolerate it.

The preparatory procedures includes oil massage, powder massage, different types of steaming etc.

And the post treatment procedures and herbal internal medicines will be given to restore the effect of the treatment.

Thus the whole Panchakarma treatment is beneficial for a diseased to cure his disease and also for a healthy person to maintain his health.

Apart from the panchakarma we have one day solution which can be done without a consecutive duration of 7 days.

This combination of treatment included in Panchakarma is called Udvarthanam, swedanam and Karshana basti

Udvartanam is a powder massage or gel scrub massage ( customized as per the patients) particularly for cellulites management. This treatment helps to reduce fat or cellulites with taking care of skin tone. The usual weight reduction results in stretch marks and loss of skin tone and this is taken care by the Udvarthanam.

Swedanam is the steaming which helps in expelling toxins through skin pores

Karshan basti is a particular herbal decoction enema specific  for the weight reduction.
